Time on your hands?

Volunteer with Mid-County

Membership Application 2 pages, 103kb

You retired to Northumberland County because the people here are friendly. Your house is finished and your grandchildren won't be visiting for a while. Fishing is fine, but it's hard to do after dark. The garden is under control, except for the greenbriar, but that can wait. You only need 5 minutes to read the local news weekly and you've read everything in the County Library. You already have everything you need, so there's no point in going shopping--and nowhere to shop, in any case. TV is, well, mostly unfulfilling.

Northumberland County is the last jurisdiction on Virginia's Northern Neck where rescue squads are fully staffed by volunteers. Squads all over Virginia are contracting with paid ambulance services, hiring paid personnel, and charging for ambulance rides. Mid-County and its sister squads in Northumberland provide basic and advanced life support emergency medical services 24/7. We don't charge a nickel to stabilize and transport our patients.

There's more to emergency medical services than responding to illness and trauma. We also:

  • Repair and maintain the station and its infrastructure
  • Clean and maintain our vehicles
  • Pick up trash along the highway through Heathsville
  • Weed the flowerbeds in front of the station
  • Maintain an inventory of medical and office supplies
  • Pay bills
  • Request funding from charitable organizations
  • Conduct annual fundraising
  • Educate the community about safety
  • Recruit members
  • Throw parties
  • Sit on hospital boards of directors
  • Participate in County-wide emergency management and policy development
  • Participate in activities of the regional emergency medical services council
  • Teach CPR
  • Coordinate the duty roster
  • Ship equipment for repair and service
  • Run errands

At the moment, the volunteers who run calls also take care of these jobs.

We need the skills you brought to your career before you retired, whether you worked in the health-care profession or elsewhere. If emergency medicine doesn't appeal to you, we probably have some other job that will.

If you're looking to make a contribution to your community and you have a couple of hours every month to give us, consider volunteering with Mid-County.

Call 804.580.8615 and leave a message. We'll be delighted to hear from you.
