Serving Northumberland County Since 1987

Happy 20th Anniversary Mid-County

Who We Are and What We Do

In times of pain and loss, the Mid-County Volunteer Rescue Squad will provide quality emergency medical services. Our purpose is to act as a stabilizing force and deliver our patients to definitive care safely, with dignity and compassion.

Our Ambulance Transportation

Our Basic Life Support (BLS) team staffs our 2 ambulances with a minimum of  an EMT and a attendant , along with a trained Driver.  BLS units provide emergency response with an ALS backup when needed. BLS personnel are trained in basic airway management, bleeding control, CPR, Orthopedic care, managing allergic reactions, assisting with delivery of newborns and much more.  Our Squad covers portions of Northumberland County, (24) hours a day – (7) days a week – (365) days a year.

Before The Ambulance Arrives

  1. After you have called 911, there are several things you can do until The Rescue Squad arrives. These simple procedures will greatly aid the EMT and the patient they will treat.
  2. If you determine that the patient is pulseless and non-breathing, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

  3. Stay calm; do not get excited. This will reassure the patient that help is on the way.
  4. Make the patient as comfortable as possible.
  5. Gather all the medication that the patient may be taking and place into a bag or keep an updated copy of all medications and their doses written on paper. This will help The EMT better determine the medical history of the patient.
  6. Move all furniture or obstacles out of the way so Our Squad Members have easy access to the patient. Make sure all pets are secure in another part of the house.
  7. Remember the time, this is very important. When was the last time you talked to the patient? How long has this medical condition existed? How long has the person been unconscious? How long have they been complaining of pain?

We want you...to volunteer with us

You retired to Northumberland County because the people here are friendly. Your house is finished and your grandchildren won't be visiting for a while. Fishing is fine, but it's hard to do after dark. The garden is under control, except for the greenbriar, but that can wait. You only need 5 minutes to read the local news weekly and you've read everything in the County Library. You already have everything you need, so there's no point in going shopping--and nowhere to shop, in any case. TV is, well, mostly unfulfilling.

Northumberland County is the last jurisdiction on Virginia's Northern Neck where rescue squads are fully staffed by volunteers. Squads all over Virginia are contracting with paid ambulance services, hiring paid personnel, and charging for ambulance rides. Mid-County and its sister squads in Northumberland provide basic and advanced life support emergency medical services 24/7. We don't charge a nickel to stabilize and transport our patients.

If you're looking to make a contribution to your community and you have a couple of hours every month to give us, consider volunteering with Mid-County.

Or Call 804.580.8615 and leave a message. We'll be delighted to hear from you.

MARCH & APRIL ACTIVITIES

The past 2 months have been busy. They have been Sad and Happy months.  We lost strong supporters of Mid-County, Mary Hinton & Donnie Bryant.  They will be missed.  Rebekah, celebrated her 60th Birthday at the squad.  The MCI drill has come and gone.  We attended YMCA Kids Day, the Farmers Market and we did Health Checks at Food Lion.  We received several funds, one from Wal-Mart which allowed us to purchase 2 GPS Units.  Food Lion also donated Funds to help PurchaseKids Fingerprint Kits which will be given out in May at the Open House to Kick Off EMS Week.
